Step 1 | Take Stock of your current packaging context

In order to help define the context within which sustainable packaging decisions are being made, use this first step to compile documents and notes that help define the business context. This can include:

corporate sustainability goals,
commitments (e.g., CPP),
instructions from key customers who have related goals, relevant regulation (current, coming), etc.
regulatory considerations (e.g., pending or anticipated regulatory changes)

Answer the following questions:

What are priorities, goals or commitments driving the need for a packaging assessment?

What timelines must the assessment respect or aim to meet?

Step 2 | Define the Scope of Assessment

Based on the packaging context identified in Step 1, identify your packaging “hot-spots” – your current packaging for which you need or wish to assess and consider sustainable alternatives. This can range from a select packaging form, a group of similar packaging, or a general class of packaging.

Answer the following questions:

What incumbent packaging (individual, group or category) needs to be assessed?*

What are the leading issues, concerns or challenges with the incumbent packaging under assessment?

Step 3 | Identify Alternative Sustainable Solutions for Assessment

Select sustainable packaging options and/or specific solutions you wish to assess against your incumbent packaging assessed in Step 3.

A total of five (5) alternatives can be included in the current version of the interactive assessment tool.
